SECURITY

In addition to a top-grade anti-virus program of your choice, I recommend the following if you have XP make sure you have your Windows firewall enabled if not use freeware utilities as a sound basis for personal computer security: ZoneAlarm for a personal firewall, and Ad-Aware to monitor invasive spyware. Every PC with Internet access should have a personal firewall installed that tracks both outbound and inbound traffic. I also strongly recommend you educate yourself on the issue as much as possible. The following sites provide various kinds of information and help.

  • Practice “Safe Hex”! Sound information on prudent self-protection while online; from www.claymania.com, a collection of safe-computing tips arising from the continuing cooperative efforts of alt.comp.virus newsgroup participants.

  • AND.doxdesk.com Parasite Detector Andrew Clover’s online system screen for unsolicited commercial software — in short, adware and related malware. Read helpful descriptions about most of them, and test for your computer at the same time.

  • HackerWatch.org Test your firewall’s effectiveness in securing your ports. Tests FTP, Telnet, SMTP, Finger, HTTP, POP3, NetBIOS, IMAP & HTTPS ports.

  • Symantec Internet Security Center Hey, of course they want to sell you something. That’s why they will be really thorough! Much to read. Then run the “Symantec Security Check.”

  • Gibson Research Corp. Steve Gibson is a professional security consultant, so he’d like your business, too. But he’s also a security activist, with several articles & free utilities, some of considerable interest.

  • Microsoft Security Notification Service Subscribe to receive free email notices from Microsoft concerning security issues in Windows and other Microsoft products.

  • Security Considerations for Network Attacks From Microsoft’s TechNet. Includes 10 tips to lower a website’s vulnerability to attack.

  • MegaSecurity.org Not for the timid! But if you want to get some idea of the scope of possible attacks, why not visit an attackers’ coffeehouse & supply shack? Provides information, useful security utilities, & enough real-life ghost stories for many a campfire.

  • HackFix.org A great source of information on "Trojan horse" viruses. In particular, see their SubSeven Trojan FAQ. Educate yourself!

  • EveningStar’s Summary of Microsoft Security Bulletins All recent Security Bulletins in one place, intended to provide easy access to Microsoft-published security hotfixes and related documents for their operating systems and applications. By MS-MVP/Security Dave Dickinson.
